When he was in high school, Luis, like most students started volunteering in grade 9 with the goal of completing his 40 hour community service in order to graduate from high school.
When he entered university he started to volunteer again in order to gain experience and skills within his field of study, human resources, while at the same time he wanted to do something positive for his community.
As a volunteer with Volunteer MBC, he is using his personal experience and education to encourage other university students to volunteer in order to gain work experience within their field before they complete their education, thereby providing them a competitive advantage.
“For me the greatest benefit is that you are not only improving and learning new skills and knowledge, but simultaneously, you are also helping others and your community,” he says. “It’s a two-way street towards positive results for both yourself and for your community.”
Luis’ volunteering experience includes the Red Cross, the Canadian Cancer Society and currently at Volunteer MBC.
