During April 18 to 26, 2009, Volunteer MBC, the Region of Peel’s new volunteer centre, encouraged all students in the Region to do their part by following the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) and by participating in a ‘spring cleaning’ of their community in recognition of National Volunteer Week and Earth Day.

Over 400 students across the Region of Peel participated and committed to a minimum of 5 hours of volunteering at one of five different events listed here:

  • Event #1 (Note: Caledon location only)
Volunteer at a public library by assisting with a used book sale
  • Event #2
Cleaning up gardens and plant flowers at seniors’ long-term care homes and/or supportive housing buildings
  • Event #3
Cleaning up community parks, trails, sports and recreation facilities
  • Event #4
Volunteer at second-hand/thrift stores for a ‘Spring Sale’ event
  • Event #5
Plant trees, repair trails, etc. working with Conservation Authority, TRCA and others
Highlights of the challenge are as follows:
  • There were 33 events in total that Volunteer MBC co-ordinated across the Region of Peel for this initiative.
  • A total of 1,800 hours of volunteering was completed during this timeframe!
  • A number of youth participated in more than one event - some of which contributed over 20 hours - one volunteer contributed 25 hours in total!
  • The park clean-ups were a huge success - in total we collected 122 bags of garbage, 17 bags of recycling, 1 grocery cart and a vast quantity of broken furniture, car parts and assorted large-scale trash.
  • The book sale at the Caledon library raised $3,000, the largest ever, which will be used to develop literacy programs at the library.
  • Quite a number of youth who participated also registered as volunteers on an on-going basis with these organizations.
  • The community welcomed the challenge with open arms. Below is a list of dignitaries who lended their support and attended some of the events:
    • Regional Councillor Allan Thompson (Town of Caledon), along with our volunteers, helped to fill tree orders for EcoCaledon at the Caledon Home Show and also attended the book sale at the Caledon Library.
    • MPP Peter Fonseca (Mississauga East--Cooksville), along with his family, helped with the Forest Glen Park clean-up.
    • Mayor Marolyn Morrison (Town of Caledon) attended the book sale at the Caledon Library.
    • MP David Tilson (Dufferin--Caledon) attended the book sale at the Caledon Library.
    • Mayor Hazel McCallion (City of Mississauga) attended the tree planting event at Shelby Woods Park.
    • Regional Councillor Richard Paterak (Town of Caledon) attended Chez Thrift (thrift store) in Caledon.
    • Minister Michael Chan (Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration) attended Volunteer MBC’s media launch along with a number of other invited guests to include Farah Nasser (Reporter – CityTV), MPP Peter Fonseca, Mayor Hazel McCallion (City of Mississauga) and Chair Emil Kolb (Region of Peel).
Thanks to all of the youth who participated, our corporate partners and many, many supporters across the Region of Peel and beyond - you have all helped to ‘Change the World’!
